Education

University of Nottingham, University Park Campus- Sports Centre

Beeston is home to the University of Nottingham’s, 300 acres University Park campus. The largest of The University of Nottingham’s campuses, it is set in extensive greenery and around a lake. University Park is conveniently located only two miles from the city centre, containing:

  • Period buildings
  • Modern state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities
  • 12 halls of residence (accommodating over 3,000 students)
  • Award-winning buildings
  • A conference and exhibition centre
  • Sports facilities
  • The Lakeside Arts Centre
  • The Portland building, featuring the Students Union, the Student support centre, as well as shops, banks, bars and restaurants.

Culture

Beeston Marina

The Beeston Marina is a well-established marina, catering to over 100 moorers. There’s also the Riverside Bar and Boathouse Cafe on site for food and drink.

Nottingham Lakeside Arts

Nottingham Lakeside Arts is The University of Nottingham’s public arts centre and museum presenting an eclectic programme of music, dance, theatre, visual art and special collections all year round. Based in the idyllic grounds of Highfields Park with two excellent cafés, and a gallery shop, there’s a varied programme including free events and workshops for both families and individuals.

Nature

Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest is a landmark with nature, history and folklore. A National Nature Reserve, Sherwood Forest is famous as the home of Robin Hood, and packed with stories, from the ancient oaks to the country’s most famous outlaw, and the work of the RSPB and their partners. A new visitor centre opened in 2018, heralding a new era for the forest and its collection of ancient oak trees and wildlife.

Additionally, The Robin Hood Festival, attracts visitors from around the world to learn about woodland crafts, the rich history of Sherwood and Edwinstowe pleasing visitors of all interests.

Transport

Beeston Tram

Beeston is served by the Nottingham Express Transit Tram System, which links it to Nottingham City Centre, among the destinations. Frequent bus services also operate to Nottingham, East Midlands Airport, Derby, Loughborough and other local towns, operated primarily by Trentbarton and Nottingham City Transport. The buses and trams both serve the Beeston transport interchange in the town centre, which offers cross-platform interchange between two modes.

The A52 passes through the very northern part of the town; Junction 25 of the M1 motorway approximately 6.4km away. The A6005 road runs through the town, to the southeast of the town centre, as do the B6006 and B6464 routes which pass through the heart of Beeston.

Beeston also has good trial transport links with Beeston station on the Midland Main Line, served by East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry. Direct trains to and from London St Pancras call at Beeston, on an hourly frequency each way, with journey times to/from the capital being typically just under 2 hours. There are also regular, direct services to Nottingham, Derby, Lincoln, Bedford, Burton-on-Trent, Leicester, Loughborough, Tamworth, Newark Castle, Luton, East Midlands Parkway, Birmingham New Street and Matlock.

Direct trains to Gloucester and Cardiff operate Monday to Saturday, in the morning and from those cities in the evening. There is also a direct early-morning train to Bournemouth on Monday to Saturday.
